Day 342- Merah Melaka

Merah means red in Malay.

Melaka or Malacca is the 3rd smallest state in Malaysia and its capital city, Malacca City has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 7 July 2008.

On 25th July 2012, Rosanna, FaiZ, MarG spent 2 delightful days here.

We were at the

Dutch Square

also known as Red Square where everything is designed to bring smiles .

Jonker Street

where they really mean it when they say Let's Paint The Town Red!

Red was everywhere..

Outside

Inside

By the River

Or against the sky

This is the city that will make you

see Red

but in a very good way.

Hey Hi Sans,
You are a colorful person, that lives in a colorful world.
I can smel the Patjoelie if I see the shops.
Formerly as a young girl (hippy from the 90s) I was fond of everything that came from the Eastern.
My student room goggled out of little boeda's and shiva's and incense, lamps and I wore india cotten blouses.
Haha, every time I look at your blog I can enjoy your world.

Dear greetings, Alexandra.

Oh what a feast!

You know how, when you're little, that you pick a favorite color and maybe it changes as you get older? But I think you always go back to your first favorite. And for me, it's red, always. I would love it here. The different shades, the vividness, the devotion to it. And when you take me inside the shops, I want to touch everything! My head is spinning! (Those silhouettes on the white wall!) Thank you for bringing us here with you.

Ewa, red is an auspicious colour for Chinese and the Peranakans :).

About the food, it was a desert made with coconut milk. Seriously GOOD! Even Rosanna loves it :).

Sans! said...

Jejejeje :) Ascensión.

¿No es maravilloso que no tengo que explicar quién es el tatuaje que es más?

besosssss

Sans! said...

Margriet, are you reading this from an exotic place where you are vacationing?

If you really want to see this place, you know I can always help make it happen :):). And I am sure you will agree that we can see anywhere in the world if we are patient and determined enough? :)

Sans! said...

Birgit, it wasn't dinner at all but desert. the plate behind the chendol (coconut milk) is fruit platter with shrimp paste. I can't even begin to explain to you how shrimp paste is made (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shrimp_paste) but the smell of the fermented shrimp is so pungent that when you put the paste out to dry, there are hundreds of flies buzzing around them. Ironically, the shop where we took the desert picture is called "Min Chong Hygienic Ice Cafe" ! :):)

We took many pictures of the food we had. Not sure if Rosanna will post them :).

Sans! said...

Norma, I will be closer to you than ever before this Thursday :). Will be in Darwin for 6 days and visiting Australia for the 1st time :). Let's see if you can spot me waving at you even though we are almost at opposite ends of Australia :):)

Sans! said...

Hi Xandra :):). Where I come from is truly filled with colours, kind of like my living room! I use incense a lot because in almost all our religions, Hindu, Taoist, Muslims, some forms of incense are being used. If there is such a thing as comfort smell, it must be that of our joss sticks for me, that and of course, the whiff of dinner (usually the frying of garlic in oil) being cooked at dusk.

I can totally imagine what your room used to look like :). I am sure I would have loved that room of yours.

Sans! said...

The Peranakan ceramic ware are collectibles now, Dale . I bought some reproduction back from this trip. In 40 years, they may be considered old and valuable :).

Sans! said...

Ara, my camera really sucks! :):) And these pictures are not that fantastic but I wanted to remember that day in Malacca. I haven't been to Malacca for a while and this time, I finally saw its beauty and experienced its charm :).

Sans! said...

Thank you Kikka :):).

Have you heard of Chinese paper cuttings? The red drawings on the wall depict them. That shop is one selling traditional crafts :).

Sans! said...

Gracias, Carmen! :)

Mío, mío, era mi pie, Eva Tatalamaru :) :) jejejejejeje

Eliana, you will find it fascinating! For one, there is a very unique Portuguese settlement here in Malacca. We were there one night to try their Portuguese food. I bet you have never heard of devil's curry which was a dish originating from the Portuguese from Malacca. The Dutch square of course had a lot of Dutch influence and then the British came and left their marks as well.

Malacca reminded me a bit of Sri Lanka :).

For some reason, Rosanna and I spoke about you. I think it was when we were talking about travelling and I told her I would like to see Brazil soon. We were both thinking of who in blogland lives in Brazil :).

Sans! said...

Christine, that is one hell of an installation, right? It was hard to get a good picture because the sun was facing us. But I had to share the picture because of the dragon. This was put up to celebrate Chinese New Year in February. It was such a magnificent display, no wonder they didn't want to take it down even though it has been 6 months! Maybe they'll recycle it for CNY 2013, lol!

Sans! said...

You made me smile, Lucy. Thank you for being here!

Sans! said...

Malaca es una ciudad hermosa y espero que usted pueda visitar algún día, Ana Garcia :)

Sans! said...

Amy, I remember you love red :). Your Little Red House will so belong in Malacca :). I didn't show you all the quaint heritage houses because the pictures were taken at night and they didn't turn out well. But an example can be seen at this blog : http://www.webintravel.com/blog/opening-homes-for-heritages-sake_2029. Don't you just want to make mini versions of them?

I have never been a big fan of red and red in such a huge dose usually gives me a headache but somehow, in Malacca, it is as natural as green in a forest. I especially love the red at the Dutch Square where it has mellowed with age to light maroon. Malacca City truly deserves its status as a world heritage site.

Sans! said...

No Eva, I thought your favourite colour is purple!! I cannot see anything purple without thinking about you :).

I have been good and busy too. I know you have been as well. Rosanna has just left :) and we have been sharing a bit about you and everyone at home. So I felt like we have caught up somehow :)

Sans! said...

Ana, you are another friend Rosanna and I talked about :) Did your ears burn? Yes, not only at the bat cave but also when we talked about Portugal and how beautiful your country is from the pictures on your blog :). Don't work too hard , rest well :).

Sans! said...

Norma Soulet, pack up your bags and just go! :):):) Malaysia and this part of the world is not too expensive and you will find it really fascinating ! :):)

Dear Sans! I am so Late to comment on this post... I missed it somehow!

Red! I Love Knowing when a Place name has "Meaning" ..... that we who don't speak the language have no idea of the connection unless someone enlightens us! I have to confess that Red is not my FAVORITE color.... but I love it's Bravery and Richness... and in my former home I painted my Library's walls a brilliant red. And I must tell you that the picture of all the shoes made me think of Amy... :)!
You are a Wonderful Travel Photographer.... you fill your photos with a visual richness that makes us want to come experience it all ourselves....
Thank you for bringing us along!
