Day 391- Easy Easel

As I watched with my mind's eye the old gardener painting his self-portrait, I saw a palette of mainly black, a few brushes and definitely a easel, an old and very used easel.

Pictures courtesy of craftsmanspace.com

So I scoured the net and finally found one that looked like it was real easy to make. Look at the plan. Study it carefully if you are planning a life size one or if you intend your artist doll  to be able to fold the easel and store it after she's done. That version is the Sophisticated Easel.

For the Easy Easel, all you need is 3 square tooth picks, an ice cream stick, pen knife and glue. 3 steps and you are there.

First, cut the requisite pieces. Use all 3 tooth picks for the legs because they already naturally look like legs. Glue the pieces as in the picture above to form the frame.See that tiny bit at the left hand corner of the frame? Save that because you will need to glue it to the center base of the shortest side of the frame.

Here we are at Step 3 after all the pieces are glued. See that center bit for the last leg? It's glued to both the base of the short side and the last leg. It keeps the leg stable. Paint it or not, but leave the glue  to dry strong before you start. Mine took 24 hours.

This is it, a no frills, easy easel if you need one for a gardener artist who builds everything he uses.

Hello Sans! Good job on the easel! You have made one that looks perfectly in keeping with the simplicity and the overall mood of the artists dwelling. I really like the way that you have finished the wood as it just like it has been well used and around for a very long long time!

Oh, mine was far more complicated and yours looks quite as good :-) Well, now I know how to make them if I need some more!!! But eh...I miss the spatters of paint on your easel...or are you such a careful and clean working artist ;-)

Who needs a sophisticated easel when an easy easel looks that good and on the plus side sounds even better.... easy easel... perfect brand name for artist's supply. *grin* You've done a wonderful job - but Margriet already said it: I too missed dripping, dropping colour spots on it. ;O)

Hi Sans! I do have a sophisticated easel ^0^ , but also an easy easel and sometimes I am an easel (LOL)!! Both do have blobs of paint, not too much, but they just have :D!! Try some paint with water, not to much but just the paint can flow of the easel to the bottom, I hope I can make myself clear?
I am honored the old gardner now has an easel, so he doesn't have to work so hard anymore ;)!
Hugs, Ilona

I love that portrait. For some reasons it reminds me a cross stitch portrait of Ray that I stitched years ago in black and white. Thank you for showing how you made the easel! Mini hugs, Natalia

Thank you E! I too have thought it was just what an old gardener artist would use until I read all my friends' comments about the paints :).

This is so easy to make I just wanted to record how I did it :).

Margriet, I could hug you 1000 miles away for the quick observation you made.

YES! I am a clean and careful artist...hahahahaha, so NOT .

Your remark about the paint? Great idea!! I will definitely do something about it and applied some paint.

Thank you Kim. Doing quick replies at work but when I am freer, I must take a trip to your blog to see what you have been up to :). Great to see you here!

Ewalina, the portrait is the reason for the easel.:):)

Sans! said...

Birgit, thank you!

Now can you tell that I do not use an easel at all? It didn't even cross my mind that I should dabbed some paint on it. Especially if I am the painter because I am quite careless. I get paints on my body parts (thigh/arm/ face!) all the time even though what I paint is often less than a square inch most of the time.

The easel is for oil painting which I know won't splatter or drip so much, right? But then I can see how if I am the artist, I will be using the bottom frame to wipe my brushes.

I am definitely going to heed all your suggestions to add colours to my easel! Hooray for blog friends!

Manu, sono davvero curioso di sapere il tuo cavalletto e sicuramente visitare per vedere come hai fatto tuo :). Così felice di vederti qui!

Ilona, as I have explained to Ewalina, your painting is the reason for the easel. I believe for the miniature paintings or Persian paintings, they use mainly water colours or pigment colours and paint it over a table, sitting cross legged on the floor. So that's when the artist is the easel :)like how you something are?

All your suggestions are great and I will definitely add colours to the easel and there will be black, yes, black with dabs of orange, white, yellow :)and light blue :)

It's may be a small suggestion by Margriet/Birgit/you but to me, this is like a big collaboration! :):)

I am talking like I am high on something ..again. Guess that's because I took the day off to work on minis yesterday and I created something so new even for myself that I am still excited about it today :).

I LOVE CREATING MINIS!!!!

you are all an artist to make things look like used, the canvas with the profile of man is perfect.

You made a great painter's easel. Thank you for showing us how you did it, perhaps I can try it in future. Not long ago I copied my own easel, but it is a different kind than yours so I would be fun to make your model as well....create a real painter's class perhaps :-)

The Easy Easel is surely a Prize-winning version of that humble but iconic Artist's tool! And you have shown how clearly it can be made... in Perfect accord with the humble surroundings of this Artist! (And I agree with the others that All easels have paint splatters!) But even so, I have a confession to make.... (whispers) I don't have an easel... I have never used one... I paint my miniatures on the drawing table... at a low slant for watercolors... and calligraphy... And I am more likely to paint at a table (when I am not painting furniture or walls, that is...) But I am pretty sure this is because I am painting miniatures.... wouldn't they look silly perched on an easel???? :):)
But that said... I am sure that when I make my mini Art Studio, it will have an easel!!!
