Days 267-270-Basketry

In Bali...

while window shopping along the trendy Seminyak;
I found traditional baskets alongside their modern versions

hung in front of a shop
these lampshades were made from the dried clusters
of MacArthur's Palm, the same kind that can be found in my garden

behind a dramatic lamp
three white beaded baskets

at a spa waiting to be massaged,
a woven tray of ingredients for the herbal drink

before the altar
offerings, the Balinese way.

At home...

souvenirs from Bali
bamboo food covers that I have always wanted,
offering baskets hand-painted in batik prints
tiffin carriers woven in the traditional ulat-ulatan style

gifts from SuZ
collected from her travels

for my dollhouses
materials, completed projects, sewing kits

..in Bali and at home...

my basket weaving kit box

niftier in a case for glasses
as suggested by Casey

Basketry, mini style.
I have just counted and much to my surprise, I found almost 40 woven wares, mainly baskets, in my tribal house. What am I to do? I just love them in so many ways.

What I loved best in Bali where the roosters cages, alas they were enormous and my house is too tiny :o(

Wow, where to start!?!? I ♥♥♥♥♥ all the pics. I especially love the baskets in your home. The hand painted batik ones are beautiful. I also really like the tiffin carriers as well as the ones below those. I have never seen baskets like those before. They are all absolutely beautiful!!! And of course your mini ones are just precious. I love mini baskets!!! =)

Wonderful baskets - they're all beautiful. Is it possible to ever have enough of them??? I don't find it surprising you have so many in your tribal house - especially because you're able to make them by yourself. Your baskets are stunning!

Greetings
Birgit

Gorgeous baskets, gorgeous photos. And those little ones of yours are fabulous!!

I've always been a little frustrated with the variety of tiny baskets I find here, but your collection gives me hope, Sans! When I reopen Norma's Cafe, in the Old Blue Barn, I would love to have bread for sale in beautiful baskets, all in a row on the bread shelf.

I love seeing elements in your world that we share, like the MacArthur palm stalks-what amazing use as a lampshade, oh the ideas! I haven't gone much beyond arranging them in a vase, but they are one of those excellent things that just land at your feet.

Your collection is wonderful, and then to see that you weave as well!

I love all your baskets (have you robbed Bali?!), both large and miniature ones... Among other things, now I see that your technique is perfect, not so you can say about mine :-(
Now that you bring the work below, you have invented a new case: "small cae with everything you need to weave baskets" !
Minu hugs, Flora

Dear Sans! You give new meaning to the term "Basket Case"! LOL! (Said in the KINDEST manner possible...) Your "basket CASE".... suggested by CASEY....! is just so sweet! And practical! I have run out and bought a couple of those cases.... just so I can fill them with portable project supplies..... now I just need to GO SOMEWHERE!!! I LOVE your collection of real baskets.... such VARIETY we don't have around here. And it explains to me why you are always making more mini baskets! That is ANOTHER mini project I hope to try SOMEDAY! Can you tell I hope to live a VERY long time....LOL.... so many Somedays all lined up!
(P.S. Did you know the expression we have over here... "basket case" is someone who is so overwhelmed that they fall apart into so many pieces you will need a basket to carry them in.... ;)
I KNOW you are not a "Basket Case" but now you HAVE at least ONE little Basket case.... Hee Hee...
Your mini baskets are Beautiful!

Love, love, love all of the bakets!!!

Hubby always says we have enough baskets and pillows, but, I disagree, there are never enough baskets and pillows.

As you have pointed out, there are so many uses for baskets.

So many different kinds of baskets, I love how exotic they look.

The eyeglass case is an excellent idea, Casey always has so many good ideas. :)

What's coming up next? hmmm.... :)

Jollie said...

Ewa, my favourite favourite basketry must be by the Japanese craftsmen. But I have always loved baskets from all over the world. I found this page of printable on Botswana basketry -for mini books :) if anyone is interested. http://thetextileblog.blogspot.com/2009/09/basketry-of-botswana.html

Just went to check out your blog my dear and saw that you haven't had a new post since July :). Write soon? :)

Sans! said...

Thank you Neha :)

Sans! said...

Rosanna, I know exactly what you mean by the rooster cages. You must make mini ones. Maybe they can be converted to a side table base in your Casa Rossa?

Sans! said...

Drora, I saw your sewing basket :). Knew right away that you, like me have a soft spot for basketry.

Sans! said...

Sans! said...

Thank you Jennifer. Not sure if you have read my earlier post on how we made these baskets : http://sansdollhousediaries.blogspot.com/2011/02/day-231-frame-baskets-for-gathering.html. They are very easy and anyone can do it. With practice, anyone can do it well, even me :).

Sans! said...

Sans! said...

Malu :):). Me encanta cestas:). Y me encanta!

Sans! said...

Susanne, it's real easy to weave the mini baskets once you get the hang of it. I posted about the techique before. http://sansdollhousediaries.blogspot.com/2011/02/day-231-frame-baskets-for-gathering.html.

And I love mosaic work. For the longest time, I had wanted to collect broken ceramics to make a table top or something. But I never break enough of my pottery (thank goodness!) :)

I will love to try some mini ones. I will love it if you can show me what you have been doing. I am sure they are beautiful!

Sans! said...

Thank you Eliana :).

Sans! said...

Sans! said...

Norma S, I am sure when the light filters through that lampshade, it is magical :).

Sans! said...

Latiana, it was love at first sight for the tiffin baskets because I have never seen baskets made this way before. I was thinking they will be great for some of my mini projects, especially embroidery. :)

You know I kept asking myself why I haven't visited your blog everytime you comment and today I realised that you don't have one! You are obviously a mini lover . You should start a blog and I will gladly follow you! :)

Sans! said...

Birgit, thank you! :) I still remember when I first started making baskets, how crude they are. http://sansdollhousediaries.blogspot.com/2009/06/my-maharajahs-palace-day-73.html

Although I will still keep those just to remind myself how far I have come. :)

One day I will make a post on all the baskets in the tribal house :).

Sans! said...

Amy, I will love to send you a basket of flowers for the re-opening of your cafe. Do send us all an e-invite! And don't forget the address :).

I don't weave very well. But I am now trying to figure out how to weave the cover for a frame basket. May have to go shop for yet another basket making book because the online tutorials are so confusing.

Amy, I have posted the tutorial for weaving the frame baskets. http://sansdollhousediaries.blogspot.com/2011/02/day-231-frame-baskets-for-gathering.html. It will be a piece of cake-basket for you !

Sans! said...

Flora, using the spectacle case to carry your mini projects was suggested by Casey of Casey's Minis. It is such a great idea, right?

I have weaved about 6-7 baskets by now. I am still not good with controlling the shape of the basket. It never quite turn out how I expect it to. I am thinking of weaving new shapes now but weaving is hard on your hand. So I do one in 2 days or sometimes longer . I always stop before my hand hurts. Do you use a tweezer?I use a dental tweezer with a bent tip. It makes weaving easier.

O, I think your baskets are wonderful! The one you did for your shabby house is a real beauty. I don't think mine are better at all!

Sans! said...

Piiko, all it takes to weave to get up to my level (which is not high at all) is practice. I wish I can make covers or a different shape or do a special weave like diamond weave blah blah but I am not a natural where working with my hands are concerned. Plus I don't understand instructions well ..haha.

Sans! said...

Thank you Kathy O-O :)

Sans! said...

Margriet, the mini baskets are easy to make. Try it. Very rewarding when you complete one. Addictive too :)

Sans! said...

Teehee Bets, no need to be polite. I haven't heard anyone use the term "basket case" for a long time. :). Use to be we refer to someone we think a little crazy, basket case as well ").

Do we know we also say "basket" (pronounced it baaaaas-KIT with the emphasis) when we swear? I think it is a polite substitution for "bastard". :)

I am not surprised at all that you love baskets. Most gardeners love baskets :)

Sans! said...

Vic, let me know if you need help when you start weaving :). All witches love baskets, all the better to put their poison apples in :).

Sans! said...

Me encanta esa fuente tanto!
Te envío muchos besitosssssssssssssssss muchos.

Sans! said...

Hi Dale! Replying to your comment 3 weeks later! You know me, always not good with emails! I am sooooooory :(
Will try to be better. :)

Baskets, I hope you will show me yours one day.

Sans! said...

Patricia, take a real holiday! Come visit me :) and then we both can go to Australia! Do you know I haven't been there? Even my nephew who is only 6 have been there 3 times! :)

Sans! said...

Kikka for your extremely sweet words :)

Oops, Kikka, meant to say thank you for your sweet words. My mind races so fast sometimes, my hands can barely catch up. And when they do, they press publish too soon ..haha
