Day 253-A Real Mud House In My Mud House

Look! Look what I found bright and early Saturday morning? I was just heading out to meet Cindy and Asuka at The Doll Affair when I found what looked like a mud house just under the roof in the bedroom of The Rolla House.

That was a wasp nest by the way and what looked like mud was actually chewed wood that gave the nest  what many thought was their distinctive papery walls. As far as I am concerned, a wasp nest feels like it is made with hardened mud mixed with dung. I should  know as I destroy wasp nests at least once every few months.  Apparently, a queen wasp will start to build a nest in the spring but then as workers hatch they take over the nest building. The wasp gathers wood fibers locally from weathered wood and then softens the wood fiber by chewing and mixing with saliva. The pulp is then used to make combs with cells for brood rearing.

A typical wasp nest will be 30cm across although they can be much larger. Sometimes big enough to hold thousands of wasps.  Common sites for a wasp nest include under the roof eaves, in lofts or in sheds and out-buildings. Interesting that this particular wasp has decided to build his nest under the roof of dollhouse. I guess big or small, a roof is a roof and they are all the same to a wasp.Of course I have destroyed the nest. Have you ever been bitten by a wasp? Painful enough to make you cry, I have been bitten twice and it hurt for over a week.

One good thing this wasp nest did for me was to spur me to start work on the kitchen. I am almost done now...

On one hand this is a kind of marvel that a living creature wants to live under the dollhouse roof - it is like your Rolla House is living it's own life.;) On the other I would destroy the nest fast too!
We once had a wasps nest on our balcony. I remember I took it to school after we killed all the wasps of course;)

I have never been bitten by a wasp, but I have been by a bee and that not only hurt it looked like a mountain on my hand. Your photos are always great, it's a joy looking at them.

Oh dear ... I fear all the nests of insects, because they usually hide their painful pitfalls ...
I do not know what would happen if one morning I found something that looks like a nest in the house of dolls ... Perhaps I would burn everything!

Dear Sans, in Denmark I think you will have the risk to be bitten or stung by a wasp off and then, in august they often get a bit aggressive. I may be bitten 10 times in my life, if I count. It hurts, but only for a day or so. The worst time was when a wasp went into a drink of mine, and I took a sip. Luckily I didn´t swallow it but got bitten inside my mouth, it hit the nerves, and I looked like someone who had been beaten up for several days...
Their constructions are fantastic..
Love, Susanne

See Sans, like all of us, even the wasps can't tell it's a miniature house! I think these wasps hmust have had a particularly great sense of style, but I agree with you, I would have destroyed the nest too!
One of my colleagues once found a wasp nest that was over a meter long in the attick of his house! Luckily he was able to remove it without being stung be any of them.

Every creature has its destination in nature - and so do the wasps... but as far as I'm concerned, I can truly live without them. I really fear them and I would never eat something sweet like cake our icecream outdoors during the summer months. And yes - I confess it, I would destroy a wasp nest, too. But that's real life, but in miniature life, your mud house on the mud house looks great, so maybe they should have their chance. A suggestion not supported by the Rollas, I suppose... that would be similiar to the sword of Damokles... ;O)

Greetings
Birgit

The wasps are so unpopular! I put my hand in a gardening glove and a wasp or bee stung me. It somehow flew into one of the fingers. I think it is a compliment to your doll house. Nature abhors a vacumn.

I think wasp nests are so beautiful! it's truly a masterpiece those little creatures make. Every summer we have a waspnest in our garden and if it is possible I just let them be. This year the made a nest in a little birdhouse that hangs against our shed. I enjoy looking at them flying in and out and working so hard!!! I find it very difficult to kill them if they aren't doing anything wrong!
Love you photo's as always!!!

Margriet said...

oh...if they get aggressive..I do kill them, especially if we are eating outside and they keep bothering us ;-)
If they leave us alone...I leave them alone :-)

Dear Sans!, While I have GREAT respect for nature.... I am NOT in favor of insects living INSIDE my house.... no matter how small! We have a kind of wasp here that builds a mud nest.... called the Mud Dauber Wasp.... and it is useful because IT attacks the larva of bugs that harm our gardens..... BUT I always try to make sure they are outside! Inside, they give me the creeps! *shudder* I hope you do not have them invade your houses again!

Do you know that I'm not very scared by wasps? although I've been bitten twice. I think that they are beautiful animals and they mud houses... gosh they are incredible ! Nonetheless.... throw them out of your home ! Still have to write but too many things are happening at once.I'll try later today when I'll be alone. Rosanna

sus avispas son de una especie diferente a las nuestras, pero la picadura es igual de dolorosa, naturalmente vieron su casa tan acogedora que decidieron vivir en ella, creo que es un gran logro suyo.
un abrazo

their wasps are a different species from ours, but the sting is painful just naturally saw their house so cozy they chose to live in it, I think it's a great accomplishment.

Ewa, I heard some strange insect noises coming from the house today.Arghhhh...I really hope they are not termites. OMG! I think I may have to get the pest men in soon!

I will be utterly heart broken if the house is attacked by termites again. What are wasps compared to them!

Sans! said...

Jennifer, can't wait to hear from you! :)

Sans! said...

& ^ 8 * 4 $ - yo juro ahora!

Sin embargo, besos y abrazos para ti:)

Sans! said...

Teehee, Drora :) You can't possibly like photos of wasps nest but thank you , my sweet friend. :).

Sans! said...

Flora, how very Victorian of you...tehehehe..with a grand touch of the dramatics too! You cheered me up , my dear and actually made me laughed out loud.

What will you do if you were me and found termites in the Rolla house?

Sighhhhh...ok I am down again :(

Sans! said...

O Susanne!! Your story reminds me of the one where I took up my cup of milo and as I lifted it near my mouth, a lizard ran out of the cup! Ahhhhhhhh!! I still get nightmare from that, thinking of the what if...till today, I do not lift my cup directly to my mouth without moving it first to see if anything flies, climb or crawl out from the cup.

And after being bitten by a wasp 10 times, surely you must have some super duper wasps power akin to that of Spiderman?

Sans! said...

I am terrified of wasps, Helene. I think I would have fainted at the sight of a 1 meter long nest! But there are worse things found in my real house. Mum says they bring good luck so I won't say what they are for now :).

Glenda said...

I have a cautious respect for wasps - I was stung repeatedly by one when I was young, and oh it hurts!!
Give me bees anyday, I can't see the purpose of wasps at all, unless they are reincarnated evil people :)

Birgit, I don't think wasps are attracted to ice cream and cakes? Although now that I think of it, I have never eaten cakes or ice creams outdoor :). Singapore is so hot most of the time, you don't want a melting ice cream on your hands under the hot sun :).

I use to loathe any insects that fly..cockroaches being one I really hate. But after living in this house for the past 15 years with so many different kinds of insects, I have grown used to them. I have even grown to like spiders.

But cockroaches and wasps, they can die! I don't dare to kill a wasp though. I think all its relatives will attack me if I do !

Sans! said...

No fear, Cindy, when you are here next Saturday, I will show you the remnants of the nest :). Mum says she will give me some termites poison also for in case.

ER for the wasp stings, o dear! In fact, I read that some people develop an allergy to wasp and can die from them. :(

Sans! said...

Carol, I don't think the wasps in my house are polite creatures . I also doubt any sincerity in their compliments :). Many of my precious books have been destroyed by them. They love camping around my book shelves.

Sans! said...

Margriet, I have never killed a wasp largely because

a) I am scared of them
b) my aim is not good and if I miss it will attack me and I am scared of them
c) like I said even if I kill one , I think all the friends, grandmother, grandfather, sons and servants will attack me and of course, that will be like my nightmare coming true!

Sans! said...

Oooooh. Eva, you need only be slightly worried about mosquitoes and my dear, your prayer worked!!! I found the car key! Hoooray! (in the pocket of the overall I was wearing..teehee )

Sans! said...

Bets, I didn't know wasps have any use . But if they do, then yes, of course, I will let them be . But trust me, if I see a nest with them swarming inside or outside my house, Mr Pest Man, I will call!

Sans! said...

Rosanna, you think wasps are beautiful? Hmmmmm :). I don't know, they have very fat bums :) like me :). Ok, maybe the wasps and I have more in common than I like :).

I wrote you an epic email today. Hope you have read it :)

Sans! said...

Contar :):):). I really think that wasps are not aesthetically inclined. And I am damn happy that they are not or my heart will break every time I see them building a nest on my antique Indian chair :) although I picked that chair from a dump. Can you imagine that? Someone throwing away an Indian wedding chair?

Who's crazier? Them for throwing away that chair or me for rescuing it? ;)

Sans! said...

Really Ana? You think the nest beautiful? You guys must be seeing something I am not. Maybe if I paint it white and give it some mirror and lace treatment.....:)

Sans! said...

Hahahahahaaha, Glenda :) Reincarnated evil people? Teeheeeehee! I will have to quote you :).

But I agree with you. I swear wasps actually look menacing! Unlike bees. I can be typing and a bee can be flying near my computer screen (they are attracted to light) and I will have absolutely no problem with it. I will even wave it away without fear that it will sting me ( maybe the bee will settle down and watch me blog ..haha) but not with a wasp. A wasp here is 3 times the size of a bee with an ass to match mine and buzz way too loudly.

I think a hive is much prettier than a wasp nest too :)

Nature is truly amazing, isn't it? I am also fascinated by wasp nests- although I also do not like them built on to my home or garage and remove them from those surfaces. I leave them be in the barn though since we don't really use the barn. I love nature to be able to interact with me- without all the creatures in nature we will be in trouble. Too bad you couldn't evict the wasp and keep the house- it looks kind of cool :)

Sans! said...

:) Kim . I did keep a little bit of the nest. :) If only you could see it in person :)

Those wasps were very fast to create their home there! :)

I agree with the others, wasps are scary. :)

I've been gotten by bees, but the wasp was the most traumatic and the worst sting. :)

But, I have heard never to swing at them, I think it just makes them angry.

Sans! said...

Dale, I guess you didn't see these nests when you were at my home?

Gawdddd I am so easily distracted...halfway typing a document and here I am commenting..haha..yea, I am still at work :). Loads to catch up after a leisurely holiday in Bali...

So what shall I post next, Bali or the Rolla's kitchen? decisions decisions..:)

dalesdreams said...

I don't know how I could have missed them!

Yikes about the monkey attack! :(

Bali, Bali, Bali, Bali! :)
